What is PUE???
The Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is a measure of how efficiently a data centre uses energy.
Specifically, how much energy is used by the computing equipment in relation to the total of how much
energy is used by the total infrastructure.
In other words, a data centre with a PUE of 1 is using no energy over and above the servers in it. A PUE of less than 1 is extremely hard to achieve as you would have to create more energy than all the environmental systems (like aircon) use to overall use less power than the servers need.
Let's try an example. Lets assume that your server uses 60W. That means that the annual power consumption is 60W x 24 hours x 365 days (at least for no-leap years). That would be 525,600Wh or 525.6 kWh per year. If your data centre has a PUE of 1.5 the overall power consumption of that server is 525.6 kWh * 1.5, which is 788.4 kWh (incl PUE).
I hope this makes sense. Either way, please let me know your thoughts.
